Bivdi

The word#

Bivdi comes from the North Sámi verb bivdit — to hunt, to fish; to ask for, to request.

Both senses land on the same idea, which is why the name fits. A hunter carries what the task needs and nothing more. A component in Bivdi holds exactly the capabilities it was handed, and to get anything else it has to ask — through a grant it can be given, never through a privilege it can assume.

Pronunciation. BIV-dee. The initial b is unaspirated, so it sits close to an English p.

Why it matters that the name is a verb#

Most operating systems are named after a thing: a kernel, a company, an animal, a place. Naming this one after an action is deliberate. Authority in Bivdi is not a property you have; it is something that was handed to you, narrowed on the way, and that expires. The whole model is a verb.

It also makes the project's single invariant easy to remember, which matters more than it sounds — an invariant nobody can recall is an invariant nobody enforces:

Nothing has ambient authority. Everything must ask.

The mark#

Three bars, each narrower than the one above it. Authority narrows as it is passed on, and never widens. It is a geometric figure and nothing more — no motif, no reference, no borrowed iconography.
